Confusion

HI everyone I am from South Africa, My mother was diagnosed with GBS 4 months ago ,she was on a ventilation machine for about a month.

she is paralyzed from the neck down and currently still at the hospital.

few weeks ago she started experiencing confusion, she looses the sense of reality completely. I have been reading up on the disease and no where do they mention confusion.

The first time it happened the doctor said she had experienced a mild stroke,a week from then her confusion faded. the confusion occured again and now the doctors says its the medication.

Can anyone assist me. Thanks

What exactly is the confusion she is having? With Guillain-Barre Syndrome affected the nerves, there are some cases where the nerves of the body can fire off randomly without command. This gives the feeling that something is touching them, when it's really not. It is not a pleasant experience, but it could be causing the confusion if it's extreme in her case. Which, considering the state she is in, she seems to have a very severe case.

Even then though, I'm not sure how that could lead to a stroke. I would consider the possibility that she might have something affecting her alongside GBS. It's not uncommon for people to be afflicted by multiple illnesses at the same time, so I would bring it up with the doctor. What medications do they have her on and for what?

Is it hallucinations maybe. I sure had lots of those. They seemed so real. Later my doctors said maybe they were caused by the heavy pain meds or the extreme pain even with the meds, or a combination of both. My family members wrote down many of the things I related to them that I thought were real when I was finally able to talk again. It was such a bizarre strange world my mind was in for so long. I still have a flashback time to time but not often.

The best thing to do is reassure her everyday that everything is under control and that she is getting better. Keep telling her that recovery takes time and that there are many of us around the world who are rooting for her recovery.

Thank you very much for all of your replies ,your replies has put my heart at ease
