High white blood cell count

Hi,

I am in desperate need of my next dose of IVIG but my Neurologist won't let me have it until my WBC count comes down to normal. It's been at 15-17 since December 4th but I haven't been ill at all. There is no explanation and I'm rapidly losing coordination in my legs. They can't find any reason for the count. All other bloods, urine etc. fine. Has anyone else had a high count and still been having IVIG? I'm confused as when I was diagnosed last August I was in a heck of a state but they still gave me IVIG! I feel like I've just been left to rot, the nearest appointment I can get with Neuro is 20th Feb-I don't think I'll be able to leave the house then. I don't know what I can say to make then see this is the only thing that works!

Are you on prednisone as well? - that can increase your WBC (leukocytosis). If so, your neurologist should know that.

Yes I am, he knows that! Sometimes I thinkmaybe I should change Neurologist. How does it increase the count exactly? I'd love to be able to quote something at him!

If you feel you need to be seen too and won’t be able to leave the house by the appointment ring for an emergency ambulance, make a point that you need treatment… And ask for steriods instead? My partner had that 5 day course over christmas and within 20 days was unable to sit up on his own. We rang an ambulance 4 days after the doctor came out and he’s been back in hospital for 22 days now. He is on a 4 day course of “steriods”, I’m not sure what they’re exactly called etc. But the doctor says its a mix of “steriods and vitamins” michael can now raise his legs on to the hospital bed and stand with (a bit of) support. The course is 4 days on the medication and 28 days off them, the doctor is unsure how long he’ll be on them for at the moment. I hope this helps and hope you get the treatment you need asap. All the best

""Steroid use can "hide" signs and symptoms of an infection and also prolonged use of them may cause leukocytosis (or elevated white counts). Steroids cause increased bone marrow release of mature neutrophils, movement into the circulating neutrophil pool, and decreased tissue migration. An increase in white blood cells and neutrophilia occurs 4 to 8 hours after elevation of stress hormones or steroid use and return to normal 1 to 3 days after.""
