Recovery

When do the physio usually try to see if you can stand up . My mum has been in hospital with GBS for two weeks . She was paralized legs arms hands Ect she had started getting movement back in her hands and arms she can lift her arms up now too . She can move her feet and legs a little bit in the bed but says her knees don’t feel like they work . I’m hoping her legs are ok . She seems to be recovering pretty quick as she was really sick a week ago being sick blood and extremely low salts . Please can anyone let me know what there recovery was like . How long you spent in hospital once physio starts . Thankyou

Hi Donna everyone is different but I was in hospital for 4 weeks and rehab another 2 weeks . I’m 3yrs out from gbs and still recovering my arms came back fast my legs longer . My legs still aren’t the same as they were before. Patience is a key and therapy. I still get tired easier than before but I know how far I’ve come . Good luck to your mom. Gail

I was in the hospital 2 weeks and then transferred to inpatient rehab for 3 weeks. I never got to the point of being on a ventilator, but did have weaknesses I my arms and facial droop on one side in addition to lower extremity paralysis. I was a physical therpist and then became a nurse, so I knew the drill. First they will sit her on the edge of the bed, and see if she can hold her trunk up. They will the see if she can do some basic leg exercises in sitting. They will then work on letting her sit in a chair for an hour or two. They will work on her transferring from the bed to chair with a sliding board. They will try to stand her at a walker with the help of a couple of people briefly or in the parallel bars. She will have to have trunk strength to sit up before she stands, becauae she will have to hold that part up to really even bear weight in her legs

Thankyou for letting me know how your recovery was . hooing I see some improvement again today when I go . It’s great when you see how they make an improvement somedays . She is doing well feeding herself and using her hands more . So just a matter of waiting to see how her legs are . She. Was having some bloods yesterday and today as they said her blood was low . Thankyou

It has been 9 months for me. I got it only from the waist down. I was in the hospital for 10 days rehab for 9 weeks. I have been home over 7 months and I had rehab for 4 months only 2 days a week. I am really wandering if it is really Guillian Barre. I was walking 15 to 18 miles a week and very healthy. I am still not able to move mt lower extremity yet. My balance is so much better. I can get out the bed with the sliding board, get in my wheel chair, and get on the couch and off. I pray and cry to god each day for him to heal my body completely. the pain can be so severe but I don’t like taking any pain medication unless necessary. This is one of the most devastating things that could happen to anyone. I will see another neurologist for the 3 time on August 11,. Please stay strong and keep the faith. I am praying for a miracle sooner than later.
