The Wayne State CMT Clinic is excited to announce its move to the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, IA. We hope to be opening our doors in Iowa near the first week of April.

We are, of course, sad to be leaving Detroit, which has been home to the CMT clinic since the fall of 1996. We greatly appreciate all the patients and families that have come through the clinic in Detroit over the past 15 years. We could not have come this far in the world of CMT research without all of you. However, it is our hope that we can do an even better job at the University of Iowa in terms of both research and patient care.

The clinic will be housed in a lovely Clinical Research Unit that is supported independently by the NIH. It is a state of the art facility that offers us the potential to grow, with more space and new equipment. Additionally, the new clinic is supported in part by the CMTA. We also will have access to a world-renowned group of neuromuscular scientists and excellent pediatric neurologists.

Iowa City is an extremely pleasant university community, home of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. It is easy to navigate for patients and families, and there are many wonderful places to stay in the area.

Shawna Feely, one of our experienced Genetic Counselors from Detroit, will be heading up the Genetic Counseling component of the clinic. The Iowa CMT clinic will continue to provide excellent multidisciplinary care for people with CMT. We will provide multiple assessments during the clinic evaluation, including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physiatry and recommendations such as orthotics and orthopedic needs. We hope to be able to expand into new areas such as exercise physiology, pulmonary function, and bone density studies as we utilize other departmental expertise within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

We are still in the process of assembling the entire Iowa team, but we hope that the team will be in place by the end of March, including a contact and scheduling person. All the research programs that were in place in Detroit (including STAR work) will be continued in Iowa and I will continue to serve as the chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the CMTA.

We hope that our long-time friends who visited us over the years in Detroit will be able to continue to visit us at the University of Iowa CMT Clinic. It is our hope that we will be able to provide even better care to serve all the patients and families that have been committed to our clinic and research over the years in Detroit.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our clinic. We hope to see you in Iowa City!

Michael Shy, MD
