Has anyone had much experience with Alpha Lipoic Acid or R-Lipoic Acid? It looks like it might help with general neuropathy. The R-form is supposed to be much more bioavailable and effective so that's what I picked up. I've read some stories where the regular did nothing and the R helped. I haven't started it yet. Anyone tried it?
My Neurologist put me on Alpha Lipoic Acid two weeks ago. I am getting better but not sure if it's because of this or not. I saw that it did have positive results in studies so felt it was worth the try.
Congratulations on getting better, Tarhealing! I'm glad to hear that the Alpha Lipoic Acid is bare minimum doing nothing (as opposed to causing harm etc...) and possibly helping! I plan to start taking it soon. I meant to ask, did the tremor-like symptoms you said you had in a different, previous post, ever go away? I'm starting to wonder if my mildly "jerky movements" (like tremors when only moving) will ever start to subside.
The tremors have gone away for me as I have gotten stronger. The muscle twitches have gotten lighter and less frequent as well. I still feel quivering movements inside like the nerves are shaking when I over fatigue later in the day and at various times when I lie down and sometimes when I have been asleep. You can't actually see it tremor though like before, I can just feel it and it's not shaking like anxiety but when I get too hot or too cold or really exhausted. Have your tremors gotten any better? When did this all start for you?
I'm glad yours have gotten better! I think mine got a little bit better a few weeks after they started but haven't had much change the past couple months. This all started for me back in last November so I'm 4 months in. The tremors started though a month later after my regular doctor put me on a short course of Prednisone, since it helps with most autoimmune conditions. At the time I was only looking up online stuff about Miller Fisher Syndrome (not general GBS), which is what I have, and so I didn't ever see the warnings about Prednisone having a potentially harmful effect on GBS until after I took it and was feeling worse. That experience has made me very cautious about taking anything.
I've been taking High Dose R-Lipoic Acid since I returned home (end of May 2014) along with some other supplements. I cannot say what would have happened had I not taken them, but I've had a great recovery.
Thanks for chiming in, Kimberly! After I run it by my doc today I think I’ll start taking them.
Ok ordered my Alpha R Lipoic Acid yesterday from Amazon. Can't wait to add it to the pile of pills I already take lol. Then I will give an update after a month as far as my results.
Watch your dose. Think that I may be having some heart rhythm issues. Better since I stopped.
Sorry to hear that! What dose were you taking? Was it the R kind? I never came across that side effect when I searched around online.
It was Alpha Lipoic Acid 300mg but not the R kind. I don't know if it is coming from this or not. I'm struggling pretty bad right now. I wore a heart monitor for 24 hours and will turn it in next week to get the results. Will let you know.
Ok I got my Alpha R Acid 300mg. Took my first pill. So I will see if it helps me. Like I said before I will give it a month. Got one that was highly rated.
I hope it helps, TNGBS! Definitely chime in a month and let us know. Tarhealing, are you still thinking the ALA might have contributed to your heart issues?
Ok I am just putting this out there. I was reading some research on Diet drinks. More so the fake sugar in them. Aspartame is the main one this article was talking about. I remember reading something about it effecting your heart causing it to beat faster or slower. Its due to the aspartame converts to methonol. So if you use aspartame or drink diet drinks that could be causing your issue. Its due to methonol poisoning. It was a pretty interesting article. Some of it was a little over my head because it was written by researchers. It listed a whole host of other issues that could be due it aspartame also.
Hi Nostomo, I'm not sure what kicked off the heart issues but found out I'm having SVTs and my heart is not damaged. May just be the re-flare of nerve activity. Hope all will settle down soon. At least the numbness & twitching is better and I'm getting my energy & strength back.
Ok I have been taking R-Lipoic Acid for about two months now. I can say in my case it helped me. I waited a month longer to really see how well they worked. I have to take them twice a day. If I don’t take them I can feel my left hand start to get that numb feeling. I found them on Amazon. Think I am taking the 300mg pills twice daily. I chose a brand made in USA and with good customer reviews. I am not going to say the brand because I don’t want anyone to think I am trying to sell product. But they do work great for me. My case is mild compared to some, but if it gives you any kind of relief it is worth it.
