I see conflicting advice as whether GBS survivors should get yearly flu shots. I understand that if your GBS was caused from a flu shot you should avoid getting a flu shot ,but what about the rest of us ? Are you getting a flu shot this year or not ?
I too have been told by my neurologist and other physicians not to get a flu shot after having GBS. I was diagnosed 21 years ago and had flu shots since I was a young age with no problems. My GBS was not related to the vaccine but I would not risk being vaccinated now.
No way, folks.
The flu vaccination consent i signed prior to me getting GBS asked if I had GBS. If you answer yes, my workplace would not administer the vaccination
I will have to discuss with my family practitioner. Last I was in for my swallowing, he mentioned that the flu shot was available and that I was one person that he definitely wanted to take the shot this year. He said that he didn't want to see me get the flu while I was recovering.
I am curious about the Airborne product, as I thought it bolsters your immune system. Not sure if I should avoid that from now on it if is some sort of catalyst to put my antibodies into overdrive.
I have trouble swallowing and will get food stuck/caught in my throat. Nothing severe mind you but enough to make me concerned that I might choke on things. Flank steak and carrots seem the worst so far. Little pieces of carrot seem to sit at the back of my throat.
I had an infection in september in my throat that caused alot of concern. It seems to be getting milder and the Neuro says that this too shall go away IN TIME.
I have adjusted by hacking alittle to cough things forward. I'm lucky not to have too many aliments left but this is one that I would like to go away for good.

Dlarlick, I would ask a neurologist who knows more about GBS then a general practitioner. Most general practitioners don't know that much about GBS or other neurological disorders/disease's. I think your doctor is totally wrong, everything that I've read about the flu shot and GBS, or heard from neurologists has been "NOT" to get the flu shot if you have had / or have GBS!!! Like Mark Wyvratt said above, most place's that administer the vaccination won't give you one if you have / or ever had GBS.
Now tell me more about your swallowing??? Do you have a problem with food getting stuck / or the feeling of food stuck in your throat??? Because I've been having the same problem lately.

Most of the flu shot ads I have seen on t.v. In the Chicago area specifically say if you’ve had GBS do NOT get a flue shot. So you decide. My GBS was definitely associated with getting a flu shot last year, so no more for me and my 60+ year old brothers. Rather have one week of flu than a year and counting of GBS.
