My balance is non existent.
In my head I can still make it down those stairs or even step on to that curb… But I can’t. I had this beautiful moment the other day where I thought I was normal & healthy again…I went down my 2 front porch steps, Only to fall face forward into the ground.
I’m curious to know how many people lost their balance due to GBS & if it ever came back. Also what it is about GBS that took it away?
I’m 4 months into GBS and my balance is ridiculously non existent. My physio has given me balance exercises to work on but no matter how much I practice I don’t improve. He says it’s because the upper body and ankles are weak plus the nerves aren’t transmitting ‘stay strong/upright’ messages to either the trunk or ankles resulting in the toppling over/ loss of balance. I’ve been blaming it on the medication too. I tried stopping some meds for two days, after an awful painful night I took the meds again this morning and yes, my balance was much worse. Hopefully time will get that balance back for both of us.good luck!!
thank you Gayleen for sharing your experience and Info. With me take care!
How long has it been since you’ve been treated? My physio talked a lot about proprioception and how nerve damage is related. I definitely lost my sense of balance, but it keeps getting better. It was very bad when I moved into rehab, two months later it was quite a bit better but I’d need to look at my feet when going down stairs, etc., and now at 4 months it is very close to normal. It will improve as your nerves heal and your leg muscles strengthen (I lost a lot of calf muscle which makes balance difficult as well).
Kimberly. I was treated almost 7 months ago. But I just recently started gaining strength back in my legs and my walking is improving. So as I gain muscle back I will keep an eye on my balance. Fingers crossed!! Thanks for the reply
Everyone heals at a different rate. The important thing is that you’re seeing improvement! Balance takes awhile, but it’s also easy to practice at home. You’ll get there!
Hi Page,
I had my 7 year anniversary of GBS this week. In my case I still have issues with balance and I walk with a cane most of the time. At first I had a vanity issue with using a cane but then decided to find some really cool canes because my balance was 100% better with a cane I could walk 3-4 times further and longer with the cane. So I have over 30 canes all different and pretty cool.
I walk down stairs kind of sideways one step at a time always gripping a hand rail.

I think that is awesome about you choosing to use lots of fun canes to give you better and safer mobility Jimmyjomo, way to go! You inspire me to find a way to make the best of the weak balance issue, thank you!
My balance is out of wack too. Some days I use my cane and others my walker but never without assistance
Better to be safe than sorry, good for you!

Hi,
Could you tell me where you get your 'cool canes'?;) I hate the idea of using one, but maybe I would if it looked 'cool'!
Thanks. Nana

Anything else that I can share please let me know my motto has become " walking no matter how efforted with a cane beats rolling in a wheelchair any day"
