Has anyone asked their neuro about the drug Pioglitazone? Studies suggest Its supposed to help heal nerve damage. Anyone take it to promote nerve healing?
Mark, has this drug already been FDA-Approved? Or is it currently in Study Trials?
The way someone explained it:
Here’s the short summary…They’ve found that a treatment for diabetes also protects demyelinatated nerves from further axon destruction, in mice. This would mean, in humans, that it would stop further destruction of your nerves, but not necessarily heal them.
It is still an important discovery, however, as it opens many doors to complete nerve regeneration, something that none of the people who suffer from neuropathies have currently.
It might get to human testing sooner since the drug is already used on humans, just needing to know whether or not the dosage is the same. Who knows when it would open up to CIDP patients for trial. And, since CIDP causes actual nerve distruction, its anyone’s guess if this treatment would overcome our autoimmune systems relentless attacks.
Following. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this exciting development!
Mark - Very interesting. Thank you.
I’ve heard very good things about the spice Turmeric (Curcumin) helping with nerve protection & healing. I’ve been taking Turmeric root extract supplements daily, esp. the ones that are standardized to contain 95% curcuminoid and have Black Pepper extract (standardized to contain 95% piperone) to help with its proper absorption. My last EMG/NCS in July didn’t show any worsening of my polyneuropathy over the past year while the previous yr.'s EMG/NCS had shown some worsening. I’m not certain that it was the Turmeric supplement that stopped my polyneuropathy from progressively getting worse, but I believe it did b/c of these well-known nerve health benefits of Turmeric. It couldn’t hurt.
